Review

Story

Raghavan (Kamal Hassan) is an efficient and intelligent ACP. Some mysterious men kill Raghavan’s colleague Anand Raj’s (Prakash Raj) daughter. Serial killings persist and investigations reveal that there is a serial killer behind these murders. Raghavan is forced to leave for New York on this official work. The rest of the story is all about how he solves the mystery behind the killings and get hold of killers

Artists Performance

Kamal Hassan gives another stellar performance in this film with his exemplary acting. He looked tough and brought authenticity to his role. Kamalinee Mukherjee did a small role in the film and she is excellent. Jyothika is pretty good as the depressed woman. Prakash Raj is good. Salim Baig (Panda of Gharshana) did a vital role and he suited the character. Lev Gorn is very good as an NYPD cop.

Technical Departments:

story – screenplay – direction:

The basic storyline of this film resembles the story of Murder by Numbers (2002). The thread of two brilliant students committing serial killings and two cops chasing them is lifted from Murder by Numbers. Screenplay of the film is pretty good. The director has gone into the finer details of the film while making it. The direction of the film is stylish and there is brilliance in shot-making. He followed Mani Ratnam’s pattern while writing the romance thread for Kamal and Jyothika.

other departments:

Music is nice and picturization is good. Cinematography by Ravi Varman is excellent. Editing by Anthony deserves a special mention. The way he uses diffusion and color transition in the first song is good. Dialogues by Dasarath (Santosham movie director) deserves a special mention. Stunts by Siva are neat. Production values are good.
Analysis:

The first half of the film is very good. The second half drags a bit because there is not much of story remains once the identity of killers is revealed. Director handled the romance in the film in a matured way. There is no problem of Tamil nativity in this film because the subject is typical Hollywood cop thriller type. The major plus points of the film are director’s taking and Kamal Hassan. On the flipside, the serial killing concept of the film might become too serious for a general entertainment seeker. On a whole, Raghavan is a decent film which you can watch at leisure. Box office wise, the film has potential to do well in A centers.

Poor Publicity Kills Kamal’s Film September 1, 2007

Kamal Hasan’s one year old movie is released yesterday in Telugu version. That was originally ‘Vetaiyadu Velaiyadu’ in Tamil which was supposed to release long back in Telugu. Initially the dubbed title was announced as ‘Vetadu Ventadu’ and then ‘Magadheera’ and finally ‘Raghavan’.

Although the film stands to be good flick with respect to the emotional quotient it that, the lack of publicity and reach ability with number of prints is killing the film at box office. Adding to all this the bomb threats in Hyderabad are also bringing in fear among people that’s killing the tempo of collections.

On a whole, the lack of publicity is killing this Kamal’s fresh film. Jothika, Kamalini Mukherjee and Prakash Raj played key roles in the film.

The voluptuous Kamalini Mukherjee is horrified by the series of stories recently linking her with various men.

“First it was that Sekhar Kammula. Then I was being linked with Sumanth and now it’s Allari Naresh. Give me a break. I have been made hopping and skipping from one man to another when in fact, I don’t have a man in my life. How I wish at least one of these rumors was true,” Kamalini Mukherjee told in chitchat.

“Just because many of my friends happen to be males it doesn’t mean I’m having an affair with them as all of them are my buddies. I’ve known them for some time and we hang around with common friends”, she added.

“Such loose talk makes us awkward. Now I’d think twice before hanging out with Kammula. As for Sumanth, please have a heart. I’ve known him since we shot for Godavari. He’s a friend. I ran into him last weekend at a pub. We laughed and spoke for maybe 10 minutes. Is that reason enough for us to be linked?”

She is asking gossipmongers to go easy. “When I have a man in my life I’ll announce it from the rooftops

So far, Kamalini Mukherjee had shunned exposure. But now the Bengali belle also seems to have joined the bandwagon of hot babes in Tollywood.

In the forthcoming EVV’s comedy film, Kamalini Mukherjee has for the first time in her career worn a reveling outfit before the camera.

In the film, Kamalini Mukherjee plays heroine for Naresh. Although Kamalini Mukherjee’s role in this film is relatively marginal one, she still has four songs picturized on her.

And having already taken the bold step in this flick, Kamalini Mukherjee will continue doing the hot stuff in further films. Let us wait and see.

Kamal Haasan Vettayadu-Velauyadu’ as ‘Raghavan’in telugu August 19, 2007

The successful Tamil film ‘Vettayadu-Velauyadu’ with Kamal Haasan, Jyothika and Kamalini Mukherjee in the lead is being dubbed into Telugu as ‘Raghavan’ by KVV Satyanarayana, Sakhamuri Panduranga Rao on the banner of Channel Communications.
REVIEW (tamil version):
Vettayadu Vilayadu
is a crisply-edited film that bears the stamp of Gautam’s directorial dexterity. Stylistic, innovative, technically top-class, VV is all this and more. And as always, Kamal is in his elements as the investigative top cop, adding a new dimension to his histrionic skills.

No minus points, you might ask. There are drawbacks, of course. The surfeit of violence, especially against women puts you off. Besides, the pace slackens a bit in the second half. And the denouement is, to say the least, a bit contrived.

DCP Raghavan (Kamal Haasan) is in Madurai to probe the brutal murder of Rani, daughter of the city Police Commissioner Arogyaraj (Prakash Raj), his mentor. Arogyaraj and his wife, traumatized by the tragedy that befell their beloved daughter, shift to New York, only to be killed.

The shocked Tamil Nadu police commandeers the services of DCP Raghavan to unearth the mystery behind the twin murders. Raghavan goes about his job with the help of New York Police and the FBI.

While in New York, Aradhana (Jyothika) comes into Raghavan’s life. The police officer saves Aradhana, who tries to end her life, fed up with a failed marriage. Bengali beauty, Kamalini Mukherjee plays Raghavan’s wife, who is bumped off by goondas.

A major highlight of Vettayadu Vilayadu is the outstanding camera work by Ravi Varman. Ravi has framed some brilliant aerial shots of New York by night.

Music director Harris Jayaraj has also come up trumps with a number of catchy tunes. You won’t forget “Manjal Veyil…” and “Partha Muthal Naal”. The song that introduces Kamal “Karka Karka” is peppy and its picturisation, excellent.

Prakash Raj does a competent job as usual. But the surprise in the package is Balaji as the serial killer. Jyothika is passable. But Kamalini takes the eye, for sure. You will see a lot more of this Bengali beauty, who steals over you, though her role is brief.

Watch it for Kamal Haasan’s brilliant delineation of the mind and methods of a top police officer.
