In what seems to be another feather in the cap of one of India’s finest actors, Kamal Haasan will now join forces with none other than Walt Disney Productions, who are slated to produce his forthcoming film Marma Yogi (Mysterious Saint). According to the buzz, this big-budget spectacle will be co-produced by Bharath Bala, who was responsible for Vande Mataram, the first patriotic music video by A. R. Rahman which made waves several years ago. The new collaboration will see Kamal Haasan and A. R. Rahman coming together after a long gap.

According to sources, Walt Disney Productions, which recently tied up with Yash Raj Films for a full-length animated feature called Roadside Romeo, wanted to expand its operations across the country. And this is why Marma Yogi was chosen.

The film, which is said to be directed by Kamal Haasan will be his fourth directorial venture. It is a period drama, set in the seventh century, which will also feature him in the lead role. Hema Malini, who worked with Kamal in Hey Ram and Asin who is cast opposite him in Dasavadharam have been roped in to play key roles. There is yet another heroine in the film. Co-incidentally, Marma Yogi is the title of one of MGR’s legendary blockbusters, which is known to be the first Tamil film to receive an ‘A’ certificate at the time of its release in 1951.

This is the second time that Kamal has adopted the title of an MGR film (after Sathi Leelavathi of 1936). The new film, which is touted to be the most expensive film ever made in the country, has an astronomical budget of approximately Rs 120 crore. The movie seems all set to compete against Rajnikanth’s recently announced film, Robot in the race to become India’s most expensive film to date. Kamal will shortly go to the US to discuss the production of this film, which is slated to be shot in Thailand. Kamal plans to start shooting for this film in February.

Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan, the two stalwarts of Tamil cinema, are likely to come together in a Mani Ratnam film, say reports.

News about the trio working together started trickling in when Rajni and Mani Ratnam had a series of meetings. The two stars recently met, first at the Kamal’s residence and then in the Raghavendra Mandapam, a wedding hall owned by Rajni, further igniting speculation.

According to the sources, Kamal will also produce the film.

If the project materialises, this will be their second film together. Three decades ago, director Bharathiraja had cast both the stars in his 1977 movie Pathinaru Vayathinile. Both Kamal and Rajni made their mark as the hero and the villain respectively in the film set in a rural ambience.

After that, they went on to carve their separate careers – Rajnikant remaining an anti-hero for a long time. When he started accepting popular roles, the tabloid media presented Kamal and him as clashing titans though both have always denied any personal enmity.

Both the stars have worked with Ratnam separately. Kamal was seen in the title role in Nayakan. Released in 1987, the film brought laurels to the director as an innovative filmmaker and Kamal too got overwhelming response for his memorable performance as a Mumbai gangster, modelled on the legendary Varadaraja Mudaliyar.

Similarly, Ratnam’s Dalapathy, released in 1991, took Rajnikant several steps up the popularity ladde

Review

Story

Raghavan (Kamal Hassan) is an efficient and intelligent ACP. Some mysterious men kill Raghavan’s colleague Anand Raj’s (Prakash Raj) daughter. Serial killings persist and investigations reveal that there is a serial killer behind these murders. Raghavan is forced to leave for New York on this official work. The rest of the story is all about how he solves the mystery behind the killings and get hold of killers

Artists Performance

Kamal Hassan gives another stellar performance in this film with his exemplary acting. He looked tough and brought authenticity to his role. Kamalinee Mukherjee did a small role in the film and she is excellent. Jyothika is pretty good as the depressed woman. Prakash Raj is good. Salim Baig (Panda of Gharshana) did a vital role and he suited the character. Lev Gorn is very good as an NYPD cop.

Technical Departments:

story – screenplay – direction:

The basic storyline of this film resembles the story of Murder by Numbers (2002). The thread of two brilliant students committing serial killings and two cops chasing them is lifted from Murder by Numbers. Screenplay of the film is pretty good. The director has gone into the finer details of the film while making it. The direction of the film is stylish and there is brilliance in shot-making. He followed Mani Ratnam’s pattern while writing the romance thread for Kamal and Jyothika.

other departments:

Music is nice and picturization is good. Cinematography by Ravi Varman is excellent. Editing by Anthony deserves a special mention. The way he uses diffusion and color transition in the first song is good. Dialogues by Dasarath (Santosham movie director) deserves a special mention. Stunts by Siva are neat. Production values are good.
Analysis:

The first half of the film is very good. The second half drags a bit because there is not much of story remains once the identity of killers is revealed. Director handled the romance in the film in a matured way. There is no problem of Tamil nativity in this film because the subject is typical Hollywood cop thriller type. The major plus points of the film are director’s taking and Kamal Hassan. On the flipside, the serial killing concept of the film might become too serious for a general entertainment seeker. On a whole, Raghavan is a decent film which you can watch at leisure. Box office wise, the film has potential to do well in A centers.

thumb_dasavatharamThe news about Dasavatharam is getting bigger and bigger as each day passes by. After the Sivaji fever, now the Dasavatharam fever has slowly started to catch up, with every small detail about the movie being analyzed by the fans and the media alike. Almost every website and print journal had told about the tsunami episode in the movie.

dasavatharamWe had also reported about the huge waves that were created by the technical team with the help of humungous wind fans deployed by the sea shore.

According to inputs from sources inside Kollywood, it seems that the team had gone all out for the scene.

To make it even more real and massive, atom bomb explosions in the mid sea have also been employed.

The biggest challenge with such explosions was coordinating the same with the shots that were canned.

The timing of the explosions and the coordination of the cast needed to be impeccable.

It is said to be easily one of the most difficult sequences and the highlight of the movie. Just cannot wait to catch it up on the silver screen, can you?

Poor Publicity Kills Kamal’s Film September 1, 2007

Kamal Hasan’s one year old movie is released yesterday in Telugu version. That was originally ‘Vetaiyadu Velaiyadu’ in Tamil which was supposed to release long back in Telugu. Initially the dubbed title was announced as ‘Vetadu Ventadu’ and then ‘Magadheera’ and finally ‘Raghavan’.

Although the film stands to be good flick with respect to the emotional quotient it that, the lack of publicity and reach ability with number of prints is killing the film at box office. Adding to all this the bomb threats in Hyderabad are also bringing in fear among people that’s killing the tempo of collections.

On a whole, the lack of publicity is killing this Kamal’s fresh film. Jothika, Kamalini Mukherjee and Prakash Raj played key roles in the film.

shankar dada zindabad rights sold!!! August 30, 2007

Remake specialists Editor Mohan and sons have bought the remake rights of the sequel to ‘Shankardada MBBS’.

The first installment of the film was a huge hit at the box office. That had inspired GFC to waste no time in buying the remake rights of ‘Lagey Raho Munnabhai’, which was remade in Telugu with Chiranjeevi as ‘Shankardada Zindabad’. Prabhudeva had directed this one.

But, ‘SDZ’ flopped badly at the box office, earning it the dubious distinction of being the biggest flop that the Megastar had ever starred in. but, the film’s music is doing very well.

Meanwhile, Editor Mohan has come forward to buy the remake rights of the film in Tamil.

‘Shankardada Zindabad’ was remade in Tamil with Kamalhasan in the lead. He might not be that keen on starring in the sequel, especially after watching the disastrous results in Telugu. But, in all likelihood, Ravi might end up playing the role of the gangster’s flamboyant sidekick.
